A pair has made a home in my backyard

When you post a photo, can you see it when you preview, or do you only see the url?

Half way down South Kingsway. Close to Humber Marshes, High Park and Lake.

you can only see the link the way you've posted it Joe.
What you need to do is add a tiny bit of code to get it to display.
your image link should look like this if you want it to display
[img]http://link.to.image.jpg[/img]

Is it not posting because it's not a jpeg?

That's right. Image tags (img) are for pictures (jpeg, jpg, gif, bmp, etc.) while URL tags are for web pages (htm, html, etc.). If you are going to show just the image, you will need to go to the properties of the image on the page you want and use that, and not the full page address.
