Title: No King Eider at Sam Smith Park
Post by: Brian Bailey on May 18, 2012, 09:20:50 PM
Did a quick bike tour of Sam Smith Park this evening checking for the King Eider.  No luck, but I did find 4 Horned Grebes in the bay where it had been.  The Eider could still be around.  There was no sign of the grebes when I went by the same spot 15 minutes later.

The Cliff Swallows have now returned to the filtration plant colony in significant numbers.  There are now Red-necked Grebes using both nesting rafts.

The King Eider was seen close in to shore in the bay with the Horned Grebes at roughly 11:45AM today but quickly started to head out for the open water.

He was back this morning feeding close to shore in the second bay (from the east).

I photographed that same duck this afternoon along the south eastern most spit
It was resting in amongst a few Mallards
