Title: Mountsberg, Mount Nemo
Post by: rcflier on May 19, 2012, 04:25:38 PM
I visited Mountsberg, Crawford Lake and Mount Nemo yesterday, May 19th. I really enjoy visiting Mountsberg.

On the way to Mountsberg I stopped in to view the three GBH nests which I spotted a few weeks ago. Each nest now has baby Great Blue Herons.  I notified the curators at Mountsberg and they were thrilled as they didn't know of this GBH clutch.

Had a nice little walk at Crawford Lake but didn't spot anything of interest.  Will have to make a return visit.

At Mount Nemo I spotted my FOL Scarlet Tanager - very beautiful. Also 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and an Oriole.

Of special interest were the Turkey Vultures.  From the very edge of the escarpment ( what a breath taking view ) you can watch the Turkey Vultures BELOW you as they circle on the thermals.  This was incredible. Often they were even at eye-level and  so close to the edge that you can almost reach out and touch them.

Today I was at one of the model airplane flying club fields that I "haunt", this one near Dundas and Trafalgar Road.  There were Turkey Vultures circling on thermals all morning long, as many as 8 in group from time to time.  A Great Blue Heron also flew past.

My buddies tried to imitate the "free flighters" with their model sailplanes, but didn't do as good a job as the "free flighters".
