Title: Common Nighthawk
Post by: Brian Bailey on May 21, 2012, 10:11:24 PM
I heard my first Common Nighthawk of the year at 8:30 this evening.  It was flying somewhere near my house in Long Branch (south Etobicoke).

I heard one here in Riverdale late last night too, but he didn't stick around long. Several years ago they were regular residents on my street and would sometimes keep me awake with their calls, but it's been awhile since I've noticed them here. Never actually seen one clearly (other than their dark shapes swooping through the trees at night).

I heard one again this evening, about the same time.  I looked, but couldn't find him.  We usually have a few resident birds in the neighbourhood through the summer (not as many as there used to be   ), so maybe one or more of them are back.

I heard one on Wednesday (May 23) evening about 9pm.  It seemed to be in the block north of Lithuania Park (didn't see it).  The sound was pretty sparse.

Last night between 7 and 8 pm I witnessed dozens of Nighthawks near my house over Stoco Lake, Tweed.
I have never seen so many at once. It was amazing!  I assume they are migrating, isn't it early for them?

I've seen nighthawks fly over the High Park baseball field all through August in the evening.
At least 5 each time.
