Title: More Cuckoos?
Post by: Reuven_M on June 12, 2012, 07:06:26 PM
Is anybody else seeing more cuckoos than normal around this year? I've never seen yellow-billed in summer in the GTA, and only 2 black-billed, but so far this year I've had 2 Yellow-billed (May 17 and June 7 in Erindale Park) and 4 Black-billed (May 30 at UTM, June 2 at Riverwood, June 11 at Erindale Park, and today in my backyard!). Also more great crested flycatchers and less pewees and grosbeaks than normal.

Yes, I have noticed more cuckoos and great-crested flycatchers.

Where in those areas are you seeing them? I've been several times and no luck. They'd be a life bird for me. Vince

All of these were found by sound, but both times I tried to see them I was succesful. Cuckoos seem very catholic in their habitat preferences, I've seen them in everything from mature forest to fields with scattered bushes and trees. Learn the calls and you should find them occasionally.
