Title: Wolves and Coyotes

We have deer in our area in the rural part of Hamilton.  How far south do wolves come?  We hear coyotes at night sometimes.  I know that wolves will hunt and kill deer.  What about coyotes?  Do they only go for smaller game, like rabbits for example?  I discussed this with some neighbours and I wasn't sure what to tell them.  Perhaps one of you knows.  Thanks.

Wolves will not be found in Hamilton.  According to the Royal Ontario Museum's website, here (http://www.rom.on.ca/ontario/risk.php?doc_type=map&id=287) is their range.

As for the coyotes, I've never heard of their going after large game.  Doesn't mean that they wouldn't under the right circumstance, but I don't think that it would be a common phenomenon.

Coyotes can and will go after deer in the right circumstances -- usually when they live in rural areas where they can live in a pack or rout as opposed to solitary. They take deer where I live -- Ayton, ON. They certainly do take large livestock eg. sheep and calves...

The subspecies of coyote that we have here in southern ontario is relatively large, or at least, with all that fur, appears large, and often mistakenly identified as a wolf...
