After watching this Green Heron feed about 50 or so feet away from me for a few hours, I though wow, he’s really close, relaxed and quite comfortable with my presence. It was then he decided to fly directly towards me and land in a tree not more than 10 feet away. He sat in that tree for more than an hour, just doing what Herons sometimes do best….nothing. He preened and pooped and preened some more. Eventually he flew off to do more exciting things…on the other side of the marsh. . I never thought I would be “too close” to a Green Heron but I was this time. It was hard to get all of him in the frame at times but not wanting to disturb him I just stayed where I was.

The best! Nice work! Being that close to a g. heron must have seemed like a dream? Perhaps even a happy nightmare? Anyhow: kudos. I must visit Rattray Marsh. Shorebirds too, now?

Yes David, there should be a whole bunch of shorebirds there for you to harrass :D .

Awesome! yeah there are lots of times where I wished I had a smaller lens with me, and when I have the small one wishing I had dragged along the big one.
Great shots!

Thanks Irene. I don't think I ever wish I had a smaller lens. I find I can never has enough reach!! What I should have done is take the TC off. But I was afraid he would fly away while I was fumbling around and before I could get any photos. Turns out I had plenty of time, I just didn't know it. Better to be safe than sorry.
