Title: More From The Backyard
Post by: MEGHAN on July 31, 2012, 06:49:14 PM
So I finally managed a few more shots  of the Hummingbirds in my backyard. Getting them away from the feeders and on the flowers is easier said than done. They seem to know what I am trying to do and go out of there way to only use the feeders when I have my camera set up.
Of course it was early morning, so I had to lower the shutter speed to allow enough light. So couldn't quite freeze the wings, but close.
Can they not understand these photo-ops need to happen around 4pm...not 9am. Obviously not.
Oh well, we take what we can get right?
The summer is quickly drawing to a close and these summertime treats will be gone again for another year.

Enjoy
Meghan

Some great shots, I haven't seen many of these this year, none in my area, I am hoping to have some better results once the jewlweed is out in the fall

Thanks Dave!!
Try Riverwood. There are always a bunch there. They nest there so you should have pretty good luck. I had planned to go photograph a nest back at the end of June but I went to Mexico instead   I heard about it too late and by the time I got back the young had fledged. But there are some great places to find them there.
I agree the best time to photograph them is once the Jewelweed is out. It's like moths to a flame for them. They are so intent on getting as fat as they can for the return flight that you can sit right beside a patch and they don't pay you much mind.
Good luck with them...time is quickly running out. If I hit a good spot I'll let you know.

I love to get me a Hummer.

The second last shot is my fave of the mix...  just saying...  but they are all very nice.

Wow Meghan, I'm glad to see that your patience was finally rewarded - those are terrific! (I have trouble getting that much detail when they're sitting on the feeder!). I still have a couple of females and one male making regular visits (he's out there now but the wasps are driving him crazy!) but I'm tired of taking feeder shots so please let us know when the 'out in the wild' photo opps are available. Btw, my research tells me that some of the males have already started south - should we expect to see any males at Riverwood when the jewelweed finally blooms?
