On Sept 12/12 through window facing west, about 4-5 am, for the first time EVER in my life, I clearly heard an owl calling nearby many times. I woke my birding kid to hear it. I guessed screech owl. Before I checked my apps on whether my guess was right, my kid and I both did a version of the call from memory. We played the Eastern Screech-owl and BINGO! The question is, can I stay awake all night tonight, in case I can hear it again?? What a thrill!

I am in Toronto, near Avenue Rd and the 401. I haven't thought of looking for it, as I always sleep with the window open in that direction, and never heard it before. In fact, I checked some migration notes, and was surprised that in fact it is not a migratory species. You are absolutely right. I will go out with my binoculars and horrify my neighbours but looking for it.

I also heard the owl around 9 pm that same night. This was in the area just south of Bloor St. West and just west of Royal York Road.
