Sunday afternoon I had the chance to watch a pileated woodpecker in front of my home. I've never seen one before although I think I've heard them drilling (a friend told me it's a very LOUD drill). I have to say, they are absolutely THRILLING to see. Spectacular. In the category of indigo buntings and scarlet tanagers of thrilling birds for my list.

Great find anywhere and to be able to watch one in your own backyard is awesome.
They are very load when they drumming and they have that unmistakable call. Sounds like they are laughing at you from the forest.
Or at least they sound like they are laughing at me.
