Title: American Black Duck @ Toogood pond
Post by: Rotarran on January 21, 2013, 06:43:32 PM
Stopped by Toogood pond in Markham today and saw a bunch of American Black Ducks (about 10 of them) and several Canada Geese.  Among the ducks was also a Black Duck / Mallard hybrid.

When I first saw them I just wrote them off as female Mallards but something about them seemed different...darker and more grey on the side of their heads and the distinct blue accent.  I know female mallards also have the blue accent sometimes (or always?) but I'm 99% sure they're ABD's.  Well I took pics and will post in the photo-forum...you be the judge: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11302 (http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11302)

Edit: just found out these guys are rather rare: around 400,000 in the wild.  That's less than virtually every other species of North American duck out there.  Maybe it's common in Ontario though.
