Title: Backyard feeder fun
Post by: rcflier on February 08, 2013, 03:08:02 PM
After Christmas we put our ( real ) tree in the backyard.  Started sprinkling bird seed out there and under the tree.

We've been having fun watching mostly Juncos, but we have 2 cardinals ( FM ) and one Cardinal male visiting regularly, and of course a few squirrels.  A few mourning doves have been visiting as well.  They really like the cover the tree provides.  ( I'm surprised it's still green hand has most of its needles )

A couple of weeks ago I went to Wild Birds and got a couple of squirrel proof tube feeders, one for black sunflower seed ( etc) and one for shelled peanuts. ( I also got a Niger feeder but haven't hung it up yet )

The birds either haven't got up the courage or haven't noticed the hanging feeders, until this morning!  We have finally been rewarded and have been enjoying a real fun day watching our friends bulk up.  The Juncos and Cardinals really like the seed feeder. Starlings have discovered the peanut feeder and we are hoping their activity encourages the Cardinals to try this feeder too.

Watching these little guys is like watching fire, it's addictive and fun,

Bob

this morning I was pleased to see out first Goldfinch at the backyard feeders.  Juncos, sparrows, a female Cardinal, Mourning Doves, Pigeons and Starlings are now regular visitors.

Just a heads up in case you were unaware, there is a forum for Backyard Bird reports (viewforum.php?f=18 (http://outdoorontario.net/birds/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=18))

I gotta get a feeder and get on that. ;)
