To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I birded this Spit this morning. The old fella must've been there before me because I failed to find a single snake, though maybe that had more to do with frigid temperatures than any heavenly influence.
The American Woodcock flushed at the base of Peninsula B, and I saw the Northern Shrike (an immature) hunting at the base of Pipit Point. This is the same location where I saw one (another immature) at the end of December, so perhaps the bird wintered over.
Raptors included three Red-tailed Hawks, a Northern Harrier, and a beautiful female Kestrel on the east side of Cell 1.
Ducks were in abundance, including many White-winged Scoters. In the bay by Peninsula D, in addition to the scoters there was a small mixed flock of American Wigeon, Redheads, and Scaup, and a pair of Canvasback. All three species of Merganser were present, with Red-breasted easily the most common.
