Title: Muskrat at Samuel Smith
Post by: Rotarran on March 19, 2013, 09:44:43 PM
Took some distant pics of what I thought was the same mink I photographed about 1 week ago but when I looked at the pics at home, it turned out that it was a muskrat all along.  Had I known at the time, I would have tried to get closer and taken better pics.

Correction, I believe this to be a Nutria.  Muskrats are smaller and less stocky.

It looks like a muskrat to me. According to the Wikipedia map Nutrias don't occur in Ontario, but they are introduced in SE United States and NW United States and southern BC.

Sorry I should have checked the range first.

Is this also a Muskrat?  I was confused because they look like two different animals...the stockiness of the above animal seems to vary from the smaller creature in this pic:

yes definitely not a Nutrias....  way too far north and  would be alot bigger than muskrat ... but I can see from the second shot how you could be fooled..sort of has the pose of one
