Title: Grebes?
Post by: beresford on March 20, 2013, 07:20:07 PM
Quick question here...

Does anyone know of anywhere, fairly reliable, in the Durham Region where I might see horned and red-necked grebes. I've made spporadic searches at Ajax Rotary, Frenchman's and Whitby Harbour to no avail. Just hoping to ctach them before they head north or I have to make a longer trip into Toronto.

Thanks
Tim

Not sure where you can see them in Durham, but they are far from heading North, they are common right into mid May

Horned Grebe you could probably get anywhere along the lakefront with some luck. Red-necked Grebes are rare to the east of Toronto as far as I know, mostly occurring in the west end of Lake Ontario. Safest bet for both is of course Sam Smith, but that's quite far for you.

On March 9, for Ajax--Rotary Park, Durham County, Ontario, someone reported 22 horned grebes and 3 red necked grebes on ebird.org. There aren't any more recent postings from there east. The only other reportings start at Humber Bay and move west.
