I had always thought that the sandpipers flying from the Bay of Fundy down to Venezuela had a long way to go. But, it seems that a Bar-tailed Godwit has just been recorded flying about 11,500 km non-stop. Here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6988720.stm) is the BBC story.

I didn't see the link on your posting, but I found it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6988720.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6988720.stm)
An amazing story. Maybe that helps explain why we see so few in migration.
