Title: 3 Double-Crested Cormorants in Thornhill
Post by: nickitka on April 24, 2013, 05:24:34 PM
Today in the afternoon I saw three Double-Crested Cormorants at Oakbank Pond (Centre St, West of Yonge). There was also a Canadian Goose with a tag collar on it. Does anybody knows what this means? Should I report it somewhere? I took a couple of picture, but the quality is very poor due to heavy rain at that time.

Someone reported earlier that some geese there were being tagged (supposedly by government officials of some sort...). I saw one of the geese on its nest with a large green tag wrapped around its neck last Sunday. It didn't look too comfortable.

Mike,

Totally agree with you! This tag is too wide. I'll post a picture in couple of minutes

That's the same one I saw. I don't know why they made the tag so big, or why it was put on the neck that way. It made me a little sad...

I will try to find out who and why was tagging those birds. Maybe it makes sense to report uncomfortable tags to the program coordinator or manager

I appreciate the concern, but what makes you think it's uncomfortable?

Have you ever seen a chicken neck when you're making dinner?   A goose's neck may look thick, but it's all feathers.   That collar isn't even close to constricting the bird's neck.

The reason for the collars being as big as they are has been discussed elsewhere.   You can't report what you can't read.

I am not talking about diameter of the tag, it's height that makes it look uncomfortable. Neck is not flexible in the area, covered by this tag.  I will check this goose today. Again, I'm not saying that the bird is 100% suffering from pain or discomfort. It just looks strange.
