Title: A small break from Warbler mania
Post by: Rotarran on May 21, 2013, 11:17:17 PM
Here are 3 interesting birds I recently encountered:

From Saturday, the Muscovy Duck at Toogood Pond...officially not a countable bird in Ontario, but I am counting it on my personal list.  I wonder if the ruling will ever be revised.  I read that in the USA, this bird is countable (Domesicated form).  And for good reason, it seems like it is perfectly able to survive and procreate in the wild.  Speaking of which, the birds I observed appeared to be a nesting couple:

The following is one of two Fish Crows I saw in Burlington on Sunday.  I was able to positively identify it by its call with a fellow birder beside me.  Not the greatest picture, sorry.  Unfortunately the nesting couple seems to have been chased away by a gang of American Crows...one possibly even killed.  Brings new meaning to the term "a Murder of Crows".  It is a sad story but also a stark reminder that nature can often be cruel.  But we can take comfort in the fact that Fish Crows are doing quite well along much of the East Coast of the United States.

From Monday, the Brant...was quite lucky to have found this bird as Leslie Spit is a big park and the report on ebird a touch vague.  Seemed to have gotten along reasonably well with the hundreds of gulls and half a dozen Canada Geese present.

Yes that guy has been at 2good for years. They should make him the resident mascot. :)

Yeah I think I remember reading something about that.  But I saw 2 birds, what looked like a nesting couple.  Perhaps they're breeding as well.  I may check back soon to see if they've had hatchlings.
