I was surprised to find a field full of baltimore checkerspots in the lower part of Bestview Park late this afternoon. I've been visiting the park for over forty years and this is my first sighting of this species there! Also saw dozens of skippers, a few cabbage whites and one well worn orange sulphur. I still haven't sighted my first monarch this year, will try German Mills Park later this week.

Hi Howie. Mostly seeing Cabbage White out here, haven't sighted any Monarch yet in the neighbourhood or at YYZ.

Great find Howie! Wonderful news, hope the population is growing. My favourite of the Toronto butterflies.
I've seen less than a handful of Monarchs this year so far. I'll be interested to see what the Monarch migration is like during the Hawk Watch at Rosetta this Fall.
Walter :)

Hi Jo-Anne and Walter!
I WAS pretty amazed to see them; all I saw at first were all these dark butterflies and I had to trudge through the brush to get a closer look and confirm their identity and get some pictures. They varied from very fresh to well worn so they should be around for a few days yet. Not much milkweed but what is there is now in full bloom. How are the butterfly attractors doing at Rosetta?
Jo-Anne, I guess the monarchs are afraid of the RWBB's! :)
Something is definitely wrong with the world when you see more hummingbirds than monarchs in early July!
