Title: Big moth
Post by: AcemanDanny on July 24, 2013, 08:17:13 PM
Saw this guy on the steps of a house.
Never seen a moth this big before.
Anyone know what kind of moth?

Not an expert, but it looks a lot like a Canadian sphinx moth.

I agree it's a sphinx.

My source says it's a Vashti sphinx moth. Not sure if that's the same moth with a different local name or not. They seem to change the names every couple of years and I'm always out of date.

I think it's either a Canadian Sphinx (sphinx canadensis) or a Great Ash Sphinx (sphinx chersis). You could try googling them and see if you can pick out anything that points to one versus the other.

It's a Great Ash Sphinx Moth (Sphinx chersis) you've got there.  Great find!
