Margaret and I were downtown this morning (she is showing signs of improvement, thanks), and as we strolled across the crabapple bed on the north side of City Hall, she muttered, "Saw-whet ..."
I assumed it was just the medication again, but, sure enough, there lay a recently-deceased Saw-whet, likely another victim of 24-hour lighting in another of the many monstrous edifices downtown.
One might think that, after the display at Metro Hall this spring by members of FLAP (Fatal Light Awareness Program : http://www.flap.org/ (http://www.flap.org/)), followed by all the promises (hollow, it seems) by uninterested, unimportant little politicians, there might be some improvement in this over-illuminated graveyard for migrants, but it's all hot (flatulent) air.
Perhaps a 4 a.m. stroll through downtown with FLAP volunteers might provide some useful light on this deplorable situation. I assure you folks who haven't are missing one of the most depressing mornings of your life.
Business as usual.
