High winds and snow squalls added some spice to birding on the Spit today. The strangest sight was a Rusty Blackbird, a male, working the muddy shoreline beneath the observation post on Bay D. It's getting late for this increasingly rare species, and it was odd to watch him feeding with the snowflakes blowing by. He was quite intent on what he was doing--I watched for about ten minutes while he worked a good stretch of the shore from south to north. With any luck, he'll stick around another week for the winter listers.
