Title: Black Vulture in West Grey
Post by: Axeman on February 04, 2014, 12:03:04 AM
A few weeks ago I saw huge bird soaring above my home....it was being mobbed by crows. It wasn't a turkey vulture...I was guessing golden eagle because black vulture didn't appear likely....and then today while driving on Sulphur Sorings Rd. I came across a black vulture standing in the middle of the oncoming lane. It was definitely a vulture and not a turkey....and definitely not a turkey vulture...I could identify it by it's bald charcoal head. I'm thinking the bird I saw overhead was this black vulture.

Juvenile Turkey Vultures also have dark heads (but have big nostrils, while Black Vultures don't) so that could be another possibility.

Would it still have juvenile plummage at this time of year ? Anyway, I was just amazed to see a vulture up here at this time of year. And umm...it definitely looked cold and miserable. Having said that....who really wants to be around a happy vulture lol
