Title: Owl makes an impression
Post by: cairnstone on February 15, 2014, 08:39:27 AM
I have been watching Long-eared Owls after dark stalk a vole colony that the ice storm debris created. They cruise or perch nearby and when they hear something under the snow they plunge into it. They are amazingly successful. I took a photo in daylight the following day of an imprint in the snow. This was a successful hunt. The owl flew about 6 feet up, perched and gobbled down it's meal. You can see the vole tunnel under the snow. Amazing accuracy.
