Title: Bronte Harbour
Post by: rcflier on March 18, 2014, 09:14:23 PM
Was hoping to see the King Eiders and was not dissapointed to see 2 of them with great viewing.

As well there were several male and female Common Merganser, a nice surprize with all of the Red Breasted Mergansers about these days.

Also Several good close views of male and female White Winged Scoter.

Several Red Head ducks, well over 1000 Scaup, and at least 2 male Wood Ducks, and several Goldeneye ( m and f ).

The highlight after the King Eiders were 2 cute little Grebes ( Id to be confirmed - horned or eared non breeding)

It was unfortunated that I had to watch helplessly as a male Red Breasted Merganser got himself caught in an Ice jam amongst the docks and appeared to fatigue himself trying to get free.  A male Common Mergy and 2 females swam over near him in his cries for help, but they causiously kept their distance.  I am afraid he perished as an hour and a half later he lay still in the ice jam.

The merganser may have been dying before it got stuck. Many are starving as they have fished out many of the open water areas. It's still hard to watch though and I'm sorry.
