I'm 99% sure I spotted one at the bird watching trail by the 2nd marsh in Oshawa..Are they very common to see ?

I've read that they've been seen more frequently this year.  Not just more frequently but also closer to shore than usual.

That has definitely been my experience.  In about 25 years of birding in Toronto, I've never seen so many, and never so consistently close to shore.

I also can't recall a winter with fewer Goldfinches, but that may be a very localized experience because I haven't birded much outside of my neighbourhood.

Goldfinches are way down this year here in Ottawa too.

Goldfinches show up regularly at a nearby birdfeeder that I visit once in a while.
