Title: Looking for bird bath heating element

hi all

Anyone know where to buy a heating element for a bird bath? I've asked at Canadian Tire and Home Despot and just get blank looks. We're in the east end of Toronto and carless so the Etobicoke Wild Birds Unlimited store is out of reach.

any pet store should carry aquarium heaters.  Buy the lowest wattage you can find (probably 50 watts) and it should have no problems keeping a bird feeder warm.  Just set the temperature to about 75 and leave it.  That way it will not be too hot for the birds but hot enough to keep it from freezing.  Also make sure that the bird bath is deep enough to cover the entire heater.  If the heating coils rise above teh water it will burn out and possibly shatter.

We got a heated dog water dish a few years ago and it works wonderfully. Just plug it in and it keeps the water from freezing all winter. We also got some old grapevine branches and molded them around it to give the birds a perch to sit on in order to drink. They all love it even the squirrels come to drink.
