Title: What bird is this??!!

My husband and I saw these two birds today. One was near the west end of Algqonquin Park, and the other was somewhere near Minden. Does anyone know what birds they are? (Perhaps the same?)

Any information on size?  I'm not totally on board with Cooper's Hawk, especially given the location.  The bird in the first photo strikes me more as a Sharpie (square tail, wings pushed forward), while the second could go either way.

Oooh … I think we've had this problem before, now that you mention it. It's difficult to say how large they were as we saw so many birds that day and these were flying above when I took the shots. We'd say that they were larger than pigeons … does that help at all? Thanks for your input, Iain!

Unfortunately that doesn't help too much as both Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawk (females) are larger than pigeons.

Definitely an Accipiter, it was too early for Broad-winged Hawks also.

Of course April 6 is a little early I saw April 13th . I thought that this was a broad winged hawk whick is why I thought the last picture rocklakemama took  was one also . Was the bird south of Minden near Miner's Bay rocklake ?

No you're right surfinbird.  This is a dark juvenile Broad-winged Hawk.

Sorry surfinbird, I didn't see your question when I looked at your photo earlier. I can't be of much help identifying birds, however ... or locations, for that matter. My husband was driving and we took a very long, very indirect route back to Toronto from Algonquin. Looks like Iain knows his stuff, though! Happy birding during this exciting time of year :D

The wings make the original photos look like a sharp-shinned to me.
