Title: Point Pelee photo event with Chris Dodds
Post by: rbostelaar on April 10, 2014, 02:43:19 PM
Canon Canada and the Henry's School of Imaging are running a number of special photo events at Point Pelee between May 8-11.

Canon is bringing Chris Dodds, one of their Northern Explorers of Lights, to the park. He is a full-time freelance nature and wildlife photographer, nature photography workshop & safari leader/instructor, photography educator, blogger, and lecturer. Chris travels to some of the best locations in the world photographing, teaching and leading nature photography safaris. His images are collected and published regularly in world-class publications. He's going to be leading three half-day and two full-day photo tours, as well as a one hour "tips & tricks" session and a number of exclusive portfolio review sessions.

As you know, there are no guarantees when photographing migrants at a place like Pelee, but there is a good chance of getting photos of numerous warbler species (i.e. Magnolia, Blackburnian, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Black-and-White), vireos, scarlet tanager, and more.

Get all the details and reserve your spot: http://www.schoolofimaging.ca/search/pelee.aspx (http://www.schoolofimaging.ca/search/pelee.aspx)

We would love to see some of you there!

I find it hard to believe this is a reputable event when a Pelee tour is advertised with a Bohemian Waxwing picture.

What's wrong with a Bohemian Waxwing?

Should be a good May event, Point Pelee is also bringing in David Sibley this year, ornithologist, author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds.

Bohemian Waxwing is extremely rare at Pelee, and the chance of seeing one in May is essentially zero. Anybody offering bird photography tours should have a modicum of knowledge of the birds, or at at least should do the research to fake it and not make fools of themselves like this. They also haven't even realized that Point Pelee is a national park. I wouldn't touch these tours with a ten-foot pole.

This isn't linked to the events run by the park, which I'm sure will be great.

The Henry's marketing department would have put the ad together, not Chris Dodd, and I am surprised the spelling is correct. They would not have done any research for this ad, just plopped in a picture of a pretty bird they found. When I worked for Henry's, 99.99% of their ads had errors in them and the fact they called Pelee a Provincial Park and not a National Park is right on par.

Anyone who has the opportunity to shot with Chris Dodds for only $350.00 should ignore the Waxwing photo and go. Chris is one of the best photographers out there right now.  So Henry's screwed up with the promo picture...big deal   . Like Paul said, this advertisement was not put together by Chris.
Saying you won't touch this tour with a ten foot pole because of that is silly. Just look this guy up. You won't be thinking Waxwings after looking at his photography.
His workshops are some of the best out there and well worth the money if great photography is what your goal is.

Just my 2 cents

Without trying to put words in Reuven's mouth, I think his point still stands. This advert is poorly done and rightly elicited his reaction. I don't think Reuven was commenting on Chris Dodds' ability with a camera or usefulness as a teacher of bird photography however if an ad has your name on it and you are unlikely to see the bird in your ad for a birding tour it does reflect poorly on you. Thanks to Paul we have the explanation as to why the ad is not up to snuff; Henry's sucks. Yes Meghan you are right Chris does do great work but Henry's even got his name wrong in the ad!  I would predict that Chris is not happy with the choice of bird nor the spelling of his last name but if Waxwing was replaced with Ostrich more of us would have reacted like Reuven did.

PS If I was going to go on a photo-shoot looking for birds it would be with Meghan. Her eye is great and best of all she uses Nikon not Canon.
