Title: ID needed
Post by: Anonymous on May 14, 2006, 11:27:59 PM
My husband and I observed a beautiful bird at our feeder and would like to know what is the name of it.  It was the size of a small robin, white under belly, black & white wings, black head and body albeit his belly, and had a bright red diamond shaped neck scarf.   If anyone knows the ID of this bird we would really like to know.  Thank you

Hi Eleanor,

that would be the male rosebreasted grosbeak.

Thank you for the speedy reply.  Now we have another unusual beautiful bird that I'd like the name of.  It's the size of a small chickadee but it's all blue.   His head is a darker, purply blue and has a bit of brown on the tips of his wings and tail.  I am a senior citizen and have never seen these birds before.   Thanking you in advance.

Hi Eleanor,

well, you've stumped me on that one.  There are a few different options that I know of offhand, but I'm not 100% certain.

Maybe someone else can ID this one?

Can you take a picture of this bird?  That would help a lot.

Thank you Iain.  The picture you have posted looks like what we had at the feeder but looks a lot larger than what we had.  Perhaps it's the picture that's making him look larger.  He was the size of a small canary and very sleek.  Really a beautiful sight.
Thanks again.
