Title: Albino Flicker ?
Post by: Ian Dean on April 22, 2014, 11:31:50 AM
Hi there,
I have this bird on my lawn that in all respects is a flicker except the only colour is the red v on the back of the head. I am inserting image and have more if necessary. If anyone can help me identify this that would be great.

thanks,

Ian

Yes, it's a Flicker. It's not actually an albino because it has some pigment.  It is leucistic, meaning it lacks some of the normal pigment.  It can manifest in a variety of ways, but this one is really unusual having a normal looking head and an almost pure white body.

Thanks Brian, I figured it might be something like that. That pic is not great and if you look at some of the others the head is mostly white as well with the only real colour being the red V on the back of the head. First one I have had the pleasure of seeing.
