After peeling off from the Toronto Ornithological Club's excellent and informative bird walk on the Spit yesterday afternoon, I was walking back to the parking lot when I discovered an Eastern Whip-poor-will roosting in the shrubs north of the Red Bridge.
The bird flushed a couple of times before settling on a low branch near the path, where I was able to take a few photos. At the same time, a small flock of Kinglets and Chickadees were swarming the Whip-poor-will and scolding it, which rather surprised me. The only reason for this behavior that occurred to me was that the bird's cryptic coloring may have reminded them of an owl.

Nicely done, after the walk we found a late Northern saw-whet Owl on our way back
