I popped in to the Wet Woods around 3:15 this afternoon - not a soul around on this beautiful afternoon. As I was walking in off the 'marina road' a bird flew in and landed on a branch near me - strange sort of shape thru the trees. I had a clear look thru my binoculars before it dropped down and worked its way over into the big wet space on that side of the field. A lovely Green Heron in all it's russet browns, and glossy greens. I watched if for about 10 minutes while it poked around, sticking to the edges pretty much. Took a few photos too. There was a Mallard drake to keep it company. I left them in the sunshine of what felt a bit like a Spring day? When I headed home at 4:30 there was no sign of it. I have seen them way out the Spit in the little ponds walking across the lily pads in the summer - maybe it was on the way out there!

Don't you just love those totally unexpected birds? What a great find - you just never know what will turn up in the Wet Woods! It's what keeps me coming back for more. :D
