Title: Looking for ID with little to go on
Post by: Howieh on May 08, 2014, 11:39:00 AM
There's a small bird foraging under the shrubbery against the far fence in my back yard. It's in the shadows so all I can tell is that it's about the size of a sparrow, probably greyish brown and here's the kicker - instead of hopping like a sparrow it appears to be walking (or waddling?) like a mourning dove but it's much too small to be a MD; any ideas will be much appreciated!

Perhaps it's a warbler.  Ovenbirds and Waterthrushes walk.  They are both moving through now and could easily show up in a backyard.

Thanks Brian. It was pretty dark but based on what I saw I think ovenbird is a pretty good guess. It was a bit smaller than a sparrow and the colour was about right. Unfortunately, unlike the sparrows, it stayed under the bushes until it disappeared into a neighbours yard and I haven't seen it since.
