Title: Sounds like dripping water
Post by: Bird Brain on May 27, 2014, 05:11:00 AM
Hi everyone.  Last night around 9:15pm, I kept hearing a loud "dripping water" sound - looked all over the apartment, under sinks, checked vents, etc.  All of a sudden, realize it's out back of building and sounds like it's some sort of bird (perhaps perched in a pine tree).   So, I call my mom and she's hearing exactly the same thing in her backyard!  (Mavis/Rathburn)

Does anyone have any idea what sort of bird (or critter) would make this sort of sound?   :?

From some recordings I have heard, the sounds you describe are made by the American Bittern.  Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAxAEoAVmuc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAxAEoAVmuc)

Hi Rotarran.  Thank You for your reply and link.  It definitely sounds a lot like the repetitive "drip" sound - wouldn't surprise me to see an American Bittern at Lake Aquitaine or even down at Lake Wabukayne.  So far, not sighting anything out of the ordinary lately at either of these lakes.
