Title: Yippee! "kek kek kek kek kek!" at Maplewood Park
Post by: Bird Brain on May 27, 2014, 10:06:04 AM
Hi everyone.  I was at Maplewood Park this morning from 7:30-9:30am.  Adult female Cooper's Hawk, adult male Cooper's Hawk and 1 imm.  (large female with yellow eyes and dark streaking on chest) - all 3 flying through the woods and all you can hear is "kek kek kek kek kek!".  :D

Adult male was going constantly to a nest with twigs in his beak - appeared to be patching/repairing the nest.

Maplewood Park:  East side of Glen Erin Dr., just North of Aquitaine Ave.

Thanks, Leslie ... and I will.  :D  It's truly thrilling watching them flying so easily and silently through the woods.

Was there ever any other activity?  Sounds like an imm female may have been contending with the adult female for the mate/territory,  as I think it would be odd to see an immature bird in that context at that time of year.

My local pair hatched three hawklets again this year and they've just fledged in the last couple of weeks, they're still around.

Sadly, No.  Maplewood Park has been oddly quiet this Summer, mainly just sighting House Sparrows.

That's too bad to hear - and odd too considering the behavior was indicative of them preparing for nesting,  and there are so many possible trees in the park - is there any chance they were active somewhere else nearby?

Here is a bit of my hawklets:

Yes, lots of parks, trees and wooded areas here in Meadowvale.   Lots of "dummy" nests at Maplewood Park and a couple of "real" nests from past years.  It seems to be a good location for hawks hunting Mourning Doves, squirrels and rabbits.  Not sure if they go after House Sparrows or not but there's certainly no lack of these birds here!
