I stopped in to check on the grebes at Humber Bay East today. The pair in the stormwater pond have 5 eggs, but I couldn't find any of the 4 juveniles. I didn't travel too far from the parking lot, so they could still be close by.
The second nest I saw last week is gone, but there's a more promising looking nest tucked away in the north west corner of the first bay east of the parking lot.

I was there yesterday as well. I saw one of the juveniles in the eastern bay diving, so I guess they are independent by now and have dispersed.

Interesting. I have seen juveniles hang around with the parents much longer than that. (begging food after they were capable of catching their own) I wonder if the parents are chased them away in anticipation of the next brood.

I was at HBE today and was told the Juvies were chased off when the new brew started hatching.
I have a post in ANYTHING GOES you should read.
Some nuts have tried to snag the Grebe on the nest with a Fishing line. They managed to really damage a Cormorant they snagged. I have posted some pictures and the story there.

There are now 3 new chicks and 3 more eggs in the nest. . I couldn't stay long so of course they all came out into full view as soon as my camera was safely packed away!
Two other pairs are building nests in the next bay. Another nest that was occupied last week now appears to be abandoned.
