Title: Sparrow ID
Post by: Grenfell on July 14, 2014, 06:51:50 AM
Hi ... Looking for a positive ID on this sparrow, that I initially took to be a Song Sparrow, but as look at the pic on screen, some features don't seem to be right - Yellow at the base of the beak, the black "eyebrow" etc. What do you think?

Many thanks in advance

I wonder if it could be a young Lincoln's Sparrow. That thin black striping on a rusty crown and the eye ring would fit Lincoln's. The malar stripe is too thin for a Song Sparrow. A mature Lincoln's would not have streaking on the belly but maybe an immature would - not sure about that. It also just has a "baby" feel to me - maybe it's the larger eye and overall small look. The only other possibility I can come up with is an immature Swamp Sparrow. I'll be very interested to hear what the experts think!

I believe it's a juvenile Song Sparrow.  (They have that yellow at the base of the bill. )
