Title: American Kestrels in Mississauga
Post by: winz on July 15, 2014, 01:37:45 PM
There are 4 American Kestrels that have been hanging out in a tree in the Kennedy Rd/ Matheson Blvd area the last couple weeks.  Appears to be a female with 3 juveniles.  Today they have been practicing riding thermals.

Wow!  Are they still in the area?  I work over at Hurontario and Matheson area.  Kestrels are awesome little Falcons.  We used to have a nesting pair a few blocks away until someone not liking the squawky young'uns did something terrible to them (gathered up all the unfledged young and dumped them at Toronto Wildlife Centre).

I often see 1 Kestrel in the winter months along Matheson west of Hurontario, near the fire station (big field).

There is one here this morning.  They are usually in the two trees with the bare limbs on the northeast corner behind the PetroCanada automatic car wash.

Saw one female yesterday in the area and went out to get a photo.  While out there one of the guys that work at the detailing center said there was a little bird under a pine tree close by, that had been there a few hours and didn't seem able to fly.  Guess what.. a young American Kestrel  .. took some photos.. will post later.. went back to my office and called a raptor center who suggested wrapping it with a towel and placing it in a tree about 5 to 6 feet off the ground, since the adult was nearby.   Went back out later, but the young one was not there.  Hopefully recovered enough to take flight.

This one was taken yesterday, possibly the same bird.. a lot healthier..

I am sure they nested nearby.

Woo hoo!  Nice they are around again.  I have seen the adults through the Winter and Spring but haven't been checking in the last couple months due to so many other things going on.  I will keep an eye out.  And so awesome of you to help the little one.   :D
