Title: Hummingbirds @ Rosetta McClain Gardens, Scarborough
Post by: Walter Fisher on August 02, 2014, 09:06:35 AM
Hi folks,

Yesterday between the hours of 9:00AM and 2:00PM I counted 8 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at Rosetta McClain Gardens.  Some were seen in the main gardens around the Black & Blue Salvia and others were observed flying along the edge of the bluffs.  All eventually headed west so I would have to assume that their migration is now underway.

Walter :)

Hi Walter, nice to hear about hummer traffic at Rosetta! How is the salvia doing? I still have lots of activity here (north Toronto) and just when I thought my males had left they showed up a few times during the storms. The feeder is about fifteen feet from my window and it was raining so hard I could hardly see it but the rainsoaked hummers were still busy stoking up for the big trip south! :)

Slightly off topic (but now that I have your attention!) what is the butterfly situation at Rosetta?

(Sorry this is off-topic for this thread)

Apparently the Salvia is doing fine, personally I think it looks a little spindly.  I don't think last night's bombardment of hail did it much good either.

In the past 2 days I've counted 12 species of butterfly in the main gardens surrounding the 'dried-up' water fountain.  The pump has been taken for maintenance.  At present the dominant butterfly would be the Silver-spotted Skipper with at least 10 being seen.  Other species are in the 1, 2, or 3 range.

Walter :)
