Tonight, while sitting on my deck watching for bats to exit my house, my daughter and I heard what seemed to be a LARGE snarling animal in the bush...it didn't sound like a raccoon but I probably would have attributed the sounds to a raccoon had it not been for the fact that it sounded like a VERY large cat...I googled bear sounds (we have them around up here in West Grey)...I googled raccoon just to make sure....and then I googled bobcat...I discovered a growl that was identical to what we heard...I have to say, if I were to guess the size of the animal based on the loudness of the snarls, I would have guessed cougar or lion even. This creature sounded HUGE. I would have even guessed bigfoot but I know there are no sasquatch in mid western Ontario...Anyone else have the same experience ? I figure that bobcats are somewhat larger than house cats...they'd have a proportionately sized snarl.

Wow that's quite an experience. Not sure of the distribution of Bobcats, Lynx or Mountain Lion but I guess Bobcats would have been most likely between those 3.

The species of cat you heard could of been a Canada Lynx too. Canada Lynx live up around the Bruce Peninsula area.

I have to admit...even though I was / am almost certain there was no danger whatsoever, the growling was unnerving. I didn't dare leave my deck. And of course it was a thrill...wish we could have seen it but it was dark dusk and animal was in the bush.
I believe lynx are possible here too...and wonder if they may account for some of the cougar sightings reported.
Cougar signs have been reported for many years in our area -- the Luther Marsh which is about 40 minutes south east of us have a number of signs (claw marks in trees, deer up in a tree) and nearby Conn boasts a number of sightings...
