Title: shrike, loggerhead?
Post by: chris sprague on January 24, 2008, 01:16:01 PM
i saw a shrike wednesday, jan. 23, late afternoon, just southeast of rockwood. bad binoculars, never seen a shrike before. can't say conclusively if it was a northern or loggerhead, but from what i've read in my guides and what i remember of the bird, i think it was a loggerhead shrike. i was very struck at the time by the blackness of beak and eyestripe. they were clearly all the same colour. is this as exciting to others as it is to me?

it is always thrilling to see a shrike, especially for the first time!
however, at this time of year it is 99% certain to be a northern shrike, not a loggerhead
Title: Northern

Agreed, Northern, still a nice find. If it was a Loggerhead in winter, birders being what we are would be jockeying for parking and tripod space.
