So I went to CSSP to see the YCNH and I got a nice photograph of it beside its cousin the BCNH. I thought it was a pretty cool picture and also informative since individually they may be hard to tell apart (in their juvenile stage at least). But side-by-side the differences are very apparent I think.

Very nice comparison.

That's a great shot with both of them in one frame. Hope it sticks around a few more days - where exactly is it at CSSP?

When I saw it, it was in the pond just to the east of the parking lot, viewed from the east side (where the path goes between the pond and the lake).

Cool photo! 8) Definitely shows the difference.

I agree!

I made the trip at lunch time today; initially the juvenile YCNH was on the branch of a tree hiding to the dismay of many birders. 20 minutes later it was flushed out by an adult BCNH and it landed on one of the rocks in plain view of the remaining birders. A lifer for me and probably to many others. Thanks to the keen observer who reported it first.

Great comparison photo! It was still there at 6:30 this evening, out in the open in great light. It never moved from its stump while I was there. An adult and juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron moved several times in the same period. I thought we were going to have both juveniles together, but the Black-crowned pulled away twice, just before landing. :-(

Great find. makes me wonder how it got here? lost in migration?..just asking...

Herons and egrets are dispersing from their breeding colonies at this time of year, so sometimes they end up out of place. I saw on Ontbirds there was a Snowy Egret at Holiday Beach also.

We saw the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron today just after 2:00PM when it was sitting alone at the south end of the island in the pond. Eventually a juvie Black-crowned flew over to join it.
Phil L. took this great photo using my camera.
