Title: Ruby Throated stragglers
Post by: Howieh on September 11, 2014, 10:29:44 AM
All of my regular young hummers departed last week (same time as last year) but I still get the odd straggler, usually around mid morning, and so far they've all been fat mature females. I know there are lots of hummers near the lakeshore  but does anyone else away from the lake still have hummers hanging around most of the time? :)

A lone female(?) arrived three days ago and has been around ever since. At 9:30am this morning it was 10C and breezy and she was being chased all over the yard by a bunch of wasps! It's almost time to refill the feeder, probably for the last time, but who knows...last year they were still passing through during the first week of October. :)

Wasps ? Wow...I have to say...I have seen few wasps...no yellow jackets...green jackets...or any of the solitary wasps...

Our regulars left about two weeks ago. We hadn't seen anything since until this afternoon when one female visited the feeder a couple of times.

The little fuzzball left a couple of days ago and things are once again quiet but I still expect some hummer action before the 'season' officially ends, probably by mid October. In the meantime I am being thoroughly entertained by the chickadorks and the cheekmonks, who don't seem to mind sharing the regular feeder.
