Title: Ducks
Post by: BetCrooks on September 11, 2014, 07:13:13 PM
I'm willing to accept that these are anything from a Teal to a Mallard. They were about half the size of the mature Mallards nearby. They were feeding steadily mostly in the water keeping their heads down but not tipping up along the edges of the mudflats in the Rattray Marsh lagoon. I liked the rusty colouring on the one but not all of them had much of that tone.

They look like Blue-winged Teal: black bill with whitish patch at the base.  The rusty ones would be juveniles.  The lead bird in the second photo might be an adult female.  Many ducks can be difficult to ID at this time of year.
