Title: Presqu'ile Passerby
Post by: Dinusaur on September 29, 2014, 11:26:52 PM
Yep, after seeing some lovely pictures in this forum and reading about a couple of un-usual visitors in Gull Island I finally made the trip to Gull Island on Sunday. Unfortunately the Whimbrel has left the shore, however, the rest were still there together with many empty shell casings on the beaches. It was fun wading through knee deep water on my way to the Island - the color and texture of the lake floor was awesome; unfortunately I didn't have the right lens to take a picture or two. The first bird I saw and photographed on the Island was the Long-billed Dowitcher. Then at lunch time the juvenile Northern Harrier showed up for his lunch - not sure if he eventually had success of not. Saw my first American Pipit; Hudsonian Godwit, a Golden Plover together with many other shore birds. Here's a few from the Island.

1. Long-billed Dowitcher - first for me. It simply landed in front of me. The is an un-cropped picture from a full format camera.

3. Juvenile Northern Harrier - first for me. When he showed up everyone one went into hiding.

Blast I had - a tranquil island with warm September sun shining and few like minded birders around - a perfect setting for enjoying the day.

I was apprehensive at first; when I arrived I didn't see anybody crossing. Once I took the first step it was easy afterwards. Just don't try to get to the other side too fast.
