Title: Whip-poor-will at Col Sam, Oct 4th
Post by: lovemypt on October 04, 2014, 05:07:39 PM
I saw the Whip-poor-will reported today at Coil Sam around 3.30pm, it was out in the open as reported; however, it didn't stay long long and flew down into the heavier bushes out of sight

I was there when it was first found.  It appeared to get nervous if anyone got very close, so we kept our distance.  Everyone had excellent scope views, once we found an angle that gave a clear view.

Oh nice. How does one find this bird among all these autumn leaves?

Mostly luck, but also the skill to pick up on that dark lump not being just a piece of wood.  Credit goes to Andrew Keaveney on both counts.

I got there around 3:30pm and it was still there for about 15 minutes until it flew off into the thickets.  Not sure if it was re-found after that as I had to leave.  Here's my best pic:

PS: gorgeous shot Brian...it is so autumny (new word?)

Thanks, some of my digiscoped shots worked out better than any of my heavily cropped 300mm shots.  None of them captured the "whiskers" though.  Well done! It looks like the later perches were considerably higher than when I saw it.

Yeah that's true, I didn't even realize that until you pointed it out.  Quite the whiskers on that one...even my cat is mildly impressed although she'd never admit it
