Title: Hawks
Post by: surfinbird on January 29, 2008, 06:46:27 AM
Monday was a day for hawks around the GTA . I counted 22 along the 401 , 410 , 403 and the DVP . The were 3 red tails in one tree just south of Eglinton on the east side of the DVP. Maybe they out speed dating . lol

i think i might've seen a red tail around the 427 and evans cross on the 25th...it was hunting on one of the overgrown dirt mounds :)

i had no idea so many stayed for the winter!

Is it just me or are there an extraordinary amount of RT's around this winter?  I don't recall seeing so many ever before.  I counted 12 different birds along Lawrence from Orton Park to the DVP this morning as the winds just started to pick up.  I see the ones around Eglinton and the DVP all the time as well as the resident around Eglinton and Leslie almost daily.

i just started birding last year - so i am unsure what the numbers were in years past. but i can say that throughout the entire year of 2007, i have not visited high park once without seeing at least two sightings, if not more!
do red tails usually migrate to warmer climates? perhaps this is a global warming issue?

there have been a pair of RT's hunting at Parklawn and Lakeshore behind the Raba in the green space for the month or so.
I watch them almost daily and get a great "birds eye view" for the 11th floor :)

This list might be of interest to those who think there are more hawks around.  I'm very new to birding so I can't say if there are more than in other years.

the Sun ran a similar article.  The star article however has a bit more detail.  Thanks for the link.
