Title: Screech Owl
Post by: cairnstone on November 04, 2014, 10:45:31 AM
Here's a cool backyard bird. One of my friends in Caledon has a Screech Owl living in his shed. It gets in and out under the eave and comes and goes as it pleases. My friend and his family are wildlife lovers so are thrilled to have it living with them. Pellets and poop on the floor a small price for the thrill! Here's a cellphone pic of the rascal:

Cool! I'm very tempted to build a shed after seeing this success!

I saw a Screech Owl one morning perched on my fence last September. I figured I would put up a Screech Owl box in the backyard. However, I figured it might not be a great idea considering they are likely to prey on perching songbirds attracted to the yard.

so?
circle of life. if they ain't eating your songbirds, they're either starving to death or eating songbirds a block away.
feed them all and they'll take care of each other number-wise.

I've got an owl box in my backyard...but the only thing that has nested in there is some type of rodent -- found a nice neat and cozy ball of moss with opening and space inside....now what would make that nest ?

It could be a red squirrel.  I had an old BBQ in my backyard a couple years ago and last spring opened it up and there was a ball of moss with a couple young red squirrels in there.

I've had a Screech-owl box up for a couple of years now but all I've had so far were a pair of nesting Starlings.  One night earlier in the year I was thrilled to hear a Screech-owl calling from a tree across the road from the house but unfortunately he didn't find the box in our yard.  Perhaps another time.
