Tonight while on my way home from work, I took notice to a Snowy Owl sitting atop a light post along the 401 near the 410.

wow. pretty early. think that the LEOs are just starting to pass through.

It's a bit early, but not by much. In years when there are decent numbers, the first ones usually arrive in November.

There is one snowy owl confirmed and photographed throughout the year that spent the entire summer on Amherst Island and is still there and healthy.

Sightings and photos are starting to pop up on social media. We brought a female in last November to the Owl Foundation. It was the 30th, and it was at another rehab place for a day or so prior. They are predicting another big year for them.
I missed LEOs last winter. Hoping for them this season.

I thought I was the only one who didn't see a snowy last year. If it happens again this year I'll be too embarrassed to admit it! But then, I probably see more house sparrows than anyone else... :)

It was Dec 5 2013 when the boys at work pointed out the Snowy Owl at Downsview in the early hours just before the sun came up.
The sightings lasted until March. One in particular seemed to be on the same light standard every day around 3:00 pm on Beffort rd.
adjacent the airfield North of the Toronto Fire station.
My wife spotted one in the field adjacent the Milton Hospital.

Hamilton area had a couple random sightings of a Snowy in August, near the RV place off Eastport. I didn't see the bird but saw the photos.
I stopped counting Snowys after 20 last winter. I used the same approach to counting them in certain areas like I do with Project Feeder Watch, only using the highest number seen at one time to count for that spot unless there was noticeable differences in the birds like an adult male to a juvi bird. Like I had 3 in one night along the stretch of the 401 coming home from work although I had single bird counts almost nightly from mid-December until mid-February. So I only counted 3 although it's possible there was more than that along the stretch.
I do regret not documenting the whole season of sightings last winter. I wonder what that number would have been?
The oddest part is that my usual sighting spots like Holland Marsh and Ravenshoe brought me only 1 bird the whole winter while others were seeing 6 and even up to 11 birds in a single outing!
The beginning of the big irruption in 2011 had Big Frank and I seeing an adult male in Bradford right around this time. I need to go back and look at files for an exact date. We were certain we spotted the bird with our bins way across a field. We followed the road up and around, and had it in very good view, basically across the road and up a bit. Man were we thrilled, adult males are the gems. Good times. I miss the big lug.

Today someone posted a photo of an adult Snowy from Minesing Wetlands area - sooner or later one will show up in Holland Marsh and hopefully in Downsview park. I am looking forward to see a few this year. It is time to upgrade my winter wear - particularly the hand gloves.
